History

3000 - 2000 b.C.
Sifnos was lived by ProEllines or Aigaious. Mining activity took place in the island (mines of silver and lead). Sifnos was elected centre of first Cyclades culture. Pro-historic graves have been discovered at Plati Gialos and at Pounta of Vathi.

1450 - 1130 b.C.
The island influenced by Mycenaeans (Citadels of: Profitis Elias at Troulaki, Saint Andreas, Saint Nikitas, Kastro).

1130 - 1120 b.C.
Iones leading by Alkinora were settled on the island coming from Athens. It is speculated the foundation of Asteos, the current village Kastro, and the denomination of island to Sifnos.

8th - 5th Century
The island faced economic blossoming due to the mining wealth and cut its own currency. The city were fortified, the Prytaneum, the market, Holy places, observatories and optical telegraphs were build for bigger protection of mining wealth.

525 b.C.
The eminent Treasure of Sifnos was build at Delphi and Sifnos received the honorary discrimination of pre-augury.

5th - 4th Century b.C.
During the wars with Persians Sifnos denied to offer facilities to the intruders and took part in the naval battle of Salamina (480 b.C.) with a Pentikontoro (a boat with fifty oars).

388 b.C.
The island devolved to the Macedonian power.

726 - 843
Due to the persecutions of people who admire the holy pictures, a lot of intellectual persons, clergymen as well as popular found shelter in Sifnos and contributed in the intellectual growth of the island.

1279 - 1262
Sifnos came back in the sovereignty of Byzantium.

1464 - 1537
After the marriage of Marietas Ntakoronia and Gozadinou, hegemonic house of Kea and Thermion, Sifnos devolved to the hegemony of Gozadinon.

1617 - 1821
During the period of Ottoman domination the island managed by the Turkish head of fleet. Then, at the same time in addition to the Greek schools, they functioned for proselytize aims schools from Catholic priests, in which studied Orthodox students too.

1646 - 1797
Sifnos was the seat of Archdiocese with jurisdiction in eleven islands and during 1979 - 1852 seat of Bishopric Sifnos and Milos.

On the foundations of ancient temple, the temple of Boss of Sifnos, Panagia Chrisopigi was build, which is one from the 224 temples which are celebrated nowadays.

1687 - 1854
Period of acne of Education in Sifnos. The eminent Faculty of Saint Grave functioned, known as Paideftirio of Archipelago, in the homonym place, in the entry of Kastro, capital city of the island until 1836. More than fifty people from Sifnos were elected archpriests of significant Thrones.

1770 - 1774
Sifnos set under Russian possession.

1821
In the list of people who put under oath of Friendship Company are reported the people coming from Sifnos: Nikolaos Gryparis, Dimitrios Lagos and Georgjos Mpaos. In 1821 the principal of school Nikolaos Chrisogelos raised the flag of Revolution in the Faculty of Sifnos and placed head of 150 warriors from Sifnos who landed in Peloponisos, where they developed multiform fighting action. He served as minister of Education in the Government of Ioanis Kapodistrias and he was the founder of the Municipal Education.

1941 - 1944
Sifnos faced the Italian possession.

2000 - 1450 b.C.
Sifnos influenced by Minoans, the island was renamed Meropi and ancient Minoa was build probably at the current area Ellinika!

524 b.C.
Political banished people from Samos invaded to the island and withdrew taking the amount of hundred Talanta, an action that shook the economy together with the mythological scupper of the mines of Saint Sostis.

477 και 377 b.C.
Sifnos became member of A and B Athenian alliance. Also the poet and musician Filoxenidis lived.

4th - 3th Century b.C.
The royal doctor Difilos from Sifnos lived, who served as the personal doctor of king of Thrace Lisimachos (360-281 b.C.). He wrote About offering to the sick and to the healthy. That period also lived the writer Malakos who wrote terms of Sifnos.

146 b.C. - 324 b.C.
Sifnos set under Roman possession. Residues monuments of this season are marble feretory with sculptural decor, which saved at Kastro and altar that possesses the place of Chancel Table in the temple of Dormition.

330 b.C. - 610
During the pre-Byzantine period, Sifnos was part of County of Islands with capital city Rhodes.

610 - 1024
During the middle of Byzantine period, Sifnos constituted a department of Subject of Aegean Seas with capital city Samos.

1207 - 1262
Sifnos set under the dukes of Archipelagos, Mark and Angelo Sanoudo.

1307 - 1464
Sifnos was conquered and controlled by the dynastic house of Ntakoronia.

1537 - 1566
The Herentin Barbarosa blames the island in the Ottoman state, while, except small periods, were managed by the Gozandinoi under Turkish suzerainty until 1671.

1642
The businessman and delegate of Sifnos Vasilios Logothetis build the monastery of Panagias Vrisianis.

1883
Kamares was established as official harbour of Sifnos.
